Intent

Why do we teach this? Why do we teach it in the way we do?

At Greenpark Academy we follow a Mastery approach to teaching Mathematics.  Maths lessons are sequenced to enable the mastery of small, cumulative steps to build a solid foundation of deep mathematical understanding and to equip children with a deep and long lasting understanding. Children master concepts one step at a time in lessons that embrace a Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach to build on prior learning and help them see patterns and connections.

Our teaching sees all children learning the same concept in small, cumulative steps, each finding and mastering challenge at their own level. This ensures learning is without limits. We value real understanding and richer, deeper learning above speed.

We aim for all our pupils to:

  • be fluent mathematicians so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • be able to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios.
  • reason mathematically including proof using mathematical language.

Implementation

What do we teach? What does this look like?

At Greenpark Academy we use Power Maths as the teaching scheme. Teachers use the overview and timings to give a broad and balanced maths curriculum at an age-appropriate level.

The Power Maths Teaching Model uses interactive whole class lessons to develop the mastery in maths children need to acquire.  Teaching is delivered step by step to build a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, structures and procedures. The structure of the programme provides opportunity to develop fluency in key facts (see the attachments below) such as times tables and number bonds.

Challenge is visible throughout the whole session, where children are asked to reason and prove their understanding at a deeper secure level.

Our lessons are designed to include a whole class discovery where the concept is introduced and then ideas are shared. We then think together and are challenged as a group. Children access their own Power Maths textbooks where they practise their fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills. The whole class then come back together to complete the Reflect which is used as AfL.

Alongside the daily Power Maths sessions additional time is allocated to Maths Meetings. These focus on core Age-Related fluency skills where the focus is rapid recall and retention.

Maths Shed is used both in and out of school to aid the learning of fluency facts.

Impact

What will this look like? By the time children leave our school they will:

Our mathematics curriculum enables children to build on prior learning from Reception to Year 6. We believe a mathematical concept has been mastered when a child can show it in multiple ways, using the mathematical language to explain their ideas. Our lessons use practical resources and real-life scenarios when appropriate. By exposing all children to the same concept we are ensuring that children are keeping up rather than catching up. By the end of KS2 we aim for children to be fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics with a conceptual understanding to then apply this knowledge to word problems. Children will be able to reason and justify their answers and solve multistep problems with increasing confidence.
