Intent

Why do we teach this? Why do we teach it in the way we do?

At Greenpark Academy, our music curriculum strives to develop musical skills and develop an appreciation of music.  It provides full opportunities for our pupils to be creative, collaborative, celebratory and challenged.  Music brings our school community together through the shared purpose of whole-school singing, ensemble playing, experimenting with the creative process and performing.  We strive to provide enrichment opportunities to enhance children’s musical journey that go beyond the Model Music Curriculum by providing instrument lessons, our school choir and partaking in local opportunity to perform.  Children also partake in weekly singing assemblies to expose children to a range of songs to allow them to express and practice the skills they have learned in class.

The sheer joy of music feeds the soul of the Greenpark Academy community, enriching each student while strengthening the shared bonds of support and trust which makes our school great!

Implementation

What do we teach? What does this look like?

Music is taught at Greenpark Academy to enable children to develop key music skills, from EYFS to Year 6, listening to pieces of music, playing instruments, engaging with musical technology, and singing with song.  Classes will explore the Model Music Curriculum with their teachers using a world leading music teaching and learning platform Charanga which has been designed specifically for the teaching of music and primary schools.

Our Music Curriculum sequences learning in the following key areas which, when taken together, all contribute towards the steadily increasing development of musicianship: listening and appraising, singing, composition, improvisation and performance. Children’s learning is profiled within school using evidence that include pictures, the voice of the child, collaborative learning and by showing progress over time.  This will be shared with parents by teachers on class dojo to commend children’s learning in music.

In our Year 4 classes, children will have enriched music sessions with an independent music teacher where she will teach the model music scheme in addition to practising to partake in local events to showcase the school’s talents.

Impact

What will this look like? By the time children leave our school they will:

  • Developed a love of music where they are introduced, exposed to, and taught about a range of styles, genres and composers linked to periods of music, both past and present.  They will be able to explain why music is an important subject to learn about and to continue to include in their lives.
  • Had opportunities to explore knowledge organisers as part of their sessions, which contains key vocabulary and are linked to specific styles, genres and composers.
  • Will be confident to discuss and dissect music comprehension and its interrelated dimensions of music which include pulse, rhythm pitch, tempo, dynamics, timbre, texture, structure and notation.
  • Will have developed confidence through performing pieces of music in local and school events.
  • Have been taught a wide range of musical skills and given the opportunities to explore them with opportunities to foster their instrumental flair and use this as a form of expression with high levels of confidence.
  • Enjoy and appreciate music for what it is as a listener, creator or performer.
  • Be ready for the next chapter of their musical education.

At Greenpark Academy, we aim for:

  • Our pupils think more musically, become more musical and better musicians.
  • For our children to be better performers, better composers and more sophisticated listeners.
