“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”

Marcus Garvey

“We are not makers of history, we are made by history”

Martin Luther King Jr

At Greenpark Academy, through the teaching of history, we wish to inspire curiosity about how the past has shaped the world in which we live today.  We want our children’s love of learning history to grow with them as they move through the school.

History teaching at Greenpark Academy focuses on enabling children to think like historians. Our curriculum is planned to ensure historical knowledge is taught alongside the development of subject specific skills including; changes within and across times chronology, interpretations of evidence, and cause and consequence.

We want pupils to be able to ask questions about the past, analyse evidence, think critically, appreciate different perspectives and develop informed judgements. Pupils will consider how the past influences the present, what past societies were like and what beliefs and cultures influenced people’s actions. As they do this, pupils develop a chronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people.

History at Greenpark Academy is taught through broad, challenging and inspiring topics, which help our children to make connections across their learning in other subjects.

The topics have been designed to complement and build on one another with clear progression and links so that as they move through the school, they will be able to explore concepts deeper by applying their history skills to explore different time periods.

As much as possible, we intend for our children to have real life experiences to learn about our local history in an active and creative way.

The sequence of learning develops our children’s subject skills and knowledge in such a way that they are able to, over time, become confident and independent learners.
